Apr 16, 2025 | Child Safety
Child trafficking threatens communities across the United States, yet many remain unaware of its true scope. Understanding how it occurs, recognizing its prevalence, and taking concrete steps to prevent it can protect vulnerable children. Below, we examine the current reality, highlight prevention methods, and share resources to combat this illicit trade.
Child Trafficking in the US
Child trafficking involves the recruitment, harboring, and transportation of minors for exploitative purposes — most commonly commercial sex or forced labor. Contrary to popular misconceptions, these crimes do not only happen abroad. According to data from the National Human Trafficking Hotline, thousands of trafficking cases are reported in the US every year. The true number is likely even higher, as many instances go unreported due to fear, stigma, or lack of resources.
Traffickers exploit vulnerable minors — such as those experiencing homelessness or unstable family environments — and use social media to find and manipulate victims. Recognizing the signs of grooming, online exploitation, and other predatory tactics is crucial to safeguarding children and preventing these crimes.
Risk Factors and Warning Signs
Several indicators may suggest a child is at risk of, or already experiencing, trafficking. While no single factor confirms victimization, awareness can prompt timely intervention. Warning signs can include:
- Sudden changes in behavior: Unexplained shifts in personality, increased secrecy, or involvement with questionable associates.
- Physical indicators: Bruises, burns, tattoos (often used for branding), or multiple cellphones.
- Unusual access to money or luxuries: Items outside a child’s means, unexplained absences from school, or new, expensive belongings.
- Online solicitations: Communication with unknown adults or receipt of inappropriate content.
Recognizing these red flags can help adults intervene before a child is coerced or further harmed.
Strategies for Prevention
Preventing child trafficking requires a multifaceted approach, involving parents, educators, law enforcement, and the broader community. Here are several strategies to help reduce the risk:
Education and Awareness
- Teaching children about healthy boundaries, online safety, and the realities of child trafficking can empower them to recognize and report suspicious behavior.
- Training educators, health care providers, and social workers to identify warning signs ensures more eyes are watching out for vulnerable children.
Strengthening Community Ties
- Fostering environments where children feel safe and supported — such as through neighborhood watch groups, community centers, and faith-based organizations.
- Ensuring local coalitions coordinate with law enforcement to monitor high-risk areas and share information on potential threats.
Parental and Caregiver Involvement
- Keeping lines of communication open is essential. Regularly discussing internet safety, friendships, and daily routines helps build trust and enables children to confide in adults about uncomfortable or dangerous encounters.
- Monitoring social media platforms and setting age-appropriate boundaries can deter online predators.
Policy and Legislation
- Supporting laws that strengthen penalties for traffickers, while providing comprehensive services for survivors, is key to systemic change.
- Encouraging local representatives to prioritize anti-trafficking efforts can lead to better-funded programs and more effective prevention measures.
Resources From the Polly Klaas Foundation
Our website provides valuable information about child sex trafficking and ways to protect minors. These resources include:
- Educational materials: Guides on recognizing the signs of trafficking and tips for talking to children about personal safety.
- Preventive action steps: Suggestions for parents and community leaders to create safer online spaces, identify and report suspicious activity, and collaborate with law enforcement.
- Victim support services: Information and resources to support families with missing children.
Community Involvement and Next Steps
In addition to familiarizing yourself with the Polly Klaas Foundation’s materials, consider volunteering with local nonprofits that focus on youth mentorship or after-school programs, and report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement or helplines to protect at-risk children and deter traffickers. Collaboration among public institutions, private organizations, schools, and businesses also strengthens prevention by raising awareness, providing training, and improving communication channels for reporting. The more communities unite and share resources, the more effectively we can combat child trafficking.
Support the Polly Klaas Foundation
The Polly Klaas Foundation has been a leader in protecting and rescuing missing children since 1993. For the past decade, they have delivered Social Media Safety Education to tens of thousands of middle-school students. By teaching kids what red flags to look for while online, kids have a better understanding of what (and who) to avoid while using their social media. We arm students with tools to become the first line of defense against adult online predators. By supporting our mission — whether through donations, volunteering as an e-volunteer through our rapid response program, or sharing educational materials — you contribute to a nationwide effort dedicated to ending child exploitation. Your involvement helps ensure that no child’s future is stolen by traffickers.
The Polly Klaas Foundation is a national nonprofit dedicated to the safety of all children, the recovery of missing children, and public policies that keep children safe in their communities. Based in Petaluma, California, we provide a variety of programs and services to support child safety from all angles. We’ve helped over 10,000 families find their missing children — but there is always more to be done. Donate today to help reunite families and keep children safe across the nation.
Apr 2, 2025 | Donations
There are several good reasons, but the one we think is most important is when you donate to the Polly Klaas Foundation, you know exactly how the funds from your donated vehicle will be used.
For example, your donated vehicle will help to find missing children. Over the past 30 years, we have helped over 10,500 families to find their missing children – That is something to feel great about!
We have also provided over 20,000 students with Social Media Safety Education. The parallel we make with the horror of the Polly Klaas Kidnapping and Social Media today, is that Polly was taken from her very own bedroom. Today, we have kids online, in their very own bedrooms, talking to people they do not know. In many cases they are communicating with adult predators, who take time to groom them online, and convince them to leave the safety of their home, with devastating consequences, including sexual assault, and sex trafficking.
By teaching middle school students what red flags to look for when online, what NOT to post, and how to be aware of their settings to avoid exposing themselves to predators, we are keeping kids safe from online abductions. Our program is brought to middle-schools and also to the public. You will feel gratified knowing your vehicle donation made the work of the Polly Klaas Foundation possible!
When you donate your vehicle to an agency that is vague about what they do with the funds, you do not know exactly how your generous gift is being used.
At the Polly Klaas Foundation, we help ALL children, regardless of their religion, race or socio-economic status. Your vehicle donation makes it possible for us to keep kids safe, and to bring missing children home! We cannot do this without your support.
There are so many deserving non-profits to choose from – But make sure you know how they use the funds! We hope you will choose to donate your vehicle
to the Polly Klaas Foundation, so you can help us find missing children in your communities, and keep kids safe online and in the real world! For more information, please visit www.PollyKlaas.org/donate or call 1-707-769-1334 and ask to speak to the Executive Director. We are here to help you make a decision that not only helps children, but helps you feel great about donating your vehicle to the Polly Klaas Foundation!

Benefits of Donating Your Car
Tax Deductions
One of the most notable benefits of donating your car to a qualified nonprofit is the potential for a tax deduction. According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), when you donate a vehicle, you may deduct the car’s selling price or fair market value (depending on the charity’s use of the vehicle) on your federal tax return. This perk can help offset your taxable income, giving you financial relief while aiding a cause you care about.
Avoiding Hassle
Selling or trading in a used car often means negotiating prices, listing the vehicle, or handling repairs. By donating, you skip these time-consuming tasks. Many charities partner with vehicle donation services that handle the paperwork, pick-up, and sale on your behalf, making the process seamless and stress-free. Here at the Polly Klaas Foundation, we handle all of the paperwork — including everything for the DMV and smog — and pick up your vehicle for free!
Supporting a Worthy Cause
By donating your car, you provide critical resources to charities that can channel the proceeds into their programs. Your contribution can have far-reaching impacts, from supporting children’s safety to funding shelters or educational initiatives. Every donation makes a difference, regardless of the vehicle’s age or condition.
At the Polly Klaas Foundation, proceeds from your generous donation will help families and children stay together and stay safe. These funds support several different programs and services — from our 24-hour hotline to safety kits and more — all focused on finding missing children and preventing child abduction.
The Car Donation Process
- Choose a reputable charity: Begin by researching nonprofits that align with causes you value. The organization should be a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity to ensure your donation is tax-deductible. It is also wise to check the charity’s financial transparency and reviews to confirm its credibility.
- Gather necessary documentation: You will need the vehicle title and any relevant paperwork to prove ownership. Confirm the charity’s specific requirements in advance. Some charities accept vehicles without titles, but the requirements vary by state and organization.
- Complete the donation form: Most charities allow you to fill out a donation form online or over the phone. Be prepared to provide details about your vehicle, including its make, model, mileage, and condition. This information helps the organization plan the best course of action for your donation.
- Schedule a pick-up: After you submit your form, the charity or its designated partner will typically contact you to arrange a pick-up or drop-off time. If the charity offers free towing, you can avoid additional expenses.
- Receive a receipt and tax paperwork: The charity or its vehicle donation partner will provide a receipt or acknowledgment letter once the vehicle is processed. Depending on the final sale price, you may also receive a Form 1098-C or other documents needed for your tax records. Make sure to keep these materials for your records.
Common Questions About Donating a Car
Will my car’s condition matter?
In most cases, charities accept vehicles regardless of their condition. Some nonprofits will refurbish a car for use in their organization or program; others may sell the vehicle at auction or salvage it for parts. Either way, your donation can still provide value.
At the Polly Klaas Foundation, we accept your car whether it is running or not!
Is donating a car really tax-deductible?
Yes, but the vehicle must be donated to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The IRS generally allows you to deduct the car’s auction sale price or fair market value if the charity uses the vehicle for its direct charitable purposes. Consult a tax professional for personalized guidance.
What paperwork should I expect?
At a minimum, you should expect a receipt or acknowledgment letter. For higher-value donations, charities often provide an official IRS form detailing the final sale price. Keep these records with your annual tax documents.
